Lonely Maxi

Lonely Maxi
When Maxi the bushbuck arrived at Daktari Wildlife Orphanage we were all worried that she would die. She was only a few days old and she had been attacked by dogs. The dogs also scared her mother away, luckily poor injured Maxi was rescued by a man named Mark. Mark brought Maxi to Daktari where she was nursed back to health.
In the wild a baby bushbuck will normally stay with its mother for 1 year. A calf and its mother will often play together, running in a circle chasing each other. For Maxi's first 3 months she lived in a cage with a few trees and with a hutch filled with straw for her bed. She would often try to reach Lizzy, the duiker who lived next to her. Maxi would also watch closely as Lizzy, who could run around camp freely, would play with Ima, the impala, and Mirabelle the puppy. We were all worried that little Maxi was lonely.
After 3 months Maxi was let out of her cage to run around free in camp during the day and she would come back to her cage to sleep at night. We were hoping that Maxi would become friends with Lizzy and Ima. Although Maxi did occasionally play with Lizzy and Ima she was a little scared of Ima. Ima is a full grown impala and she loves to head butt her smaller friends, Lizzy understood that this was a game but little Maxi would become frightened and run back to her cage. We were all worried that Maxi was still lonely in camp. One day Maxi surprised us by making her own friend, Eeyore. Eeyore is an old donkey who we recently rescued, Eeyore can't live freely with our other donkey's because he is blind. Every morning when the door to Maxi's cage is opened she goes and finds Eeyore. They spend hours eating grass and leaves together and at least once a day we see them rubbing noses.
